Meredith College to Honor Elaine Buxton

Raleigh, NC. — May 12, 1999 — Elaine Buxton is one of 100 Meredith College to be honored at a special ceremony Friday night at the college’s Raleigh campus.

During the event, the college will dedicate a mural hanging in the student center which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the year Meredith opened its doors (1899). Short biographies of the 100 alumnae honored in the mural will be displayed alongside the mural. Some sixty of the honorees will attend the dedication, some traveling from as far away as Texas, New York and Chicago.

The mural is a gift from Meredith’s class of 1997. Meredith’s associate professor of art, Linda Fitz-Simons, was the artist and organizer of the mural. “A committee of writers and researchers selected the final 100 [alumnae] based purely on their life achievements after they left college,” Fitz-Simons said.
